Course name: Non-equilibrium Materials Course ID: F050512 Credit/Class hour: 2.0 /36 Class period: Spring School of Class: School of Materials Science and Engineering Teacher: Jinfu Li Introduction: Non-equilibrium materials mean that their structure is far from the thermodynamic equilibrium in the application condition. Although it has been thousands of years since non-equilibrium materials appeared in the human activities, the modern non-equilibrium materials are specially defined as the novel metastable materials fabricated by the unconventional processing methods, for instance, amorphous alloys and hyperfine grained alloys. They are now attracting more and more attention of the researchers working at the materials science and engineering, metallurgy as well as condensed physics. This course first introduces the structural characteristics and the forming principles of non-equilibrium materials, and then presents the main fabrication methods from gases, liquids and solids respectively. Finally their properties and application in engineering are discussed. This course is an important complement to the course such as “fundamentals of materials science” and “fundamentals of materials processing”, and is designed for master students and PhD students.
