This report starts with discussing the difficulties of tranditional methods in predicting the glass forming ability of Al-based alloys. Several new models/methods based on atomic packing structure are also introduced. Those models/methods are useful to find the alloys composition with best glass forming ability for Al-Ni-Re. But there exists obvious deviation when those models/methods applying to Al-Co-Re. It is also found that the glass forming ability of Al-Co-Re. is much less than Al-Ni-Re. Future work will be carried out to analysis the differences between Al-Ni-Re and Al-Co-Re. and the effects of substitution of other transitional elements (such as Ni) for Co on the glass forming ability of Al-Co-Re alloy.
